Atlantic Beach is a separate municipality a few minutes north of Jacksonville Beach on the same barrier island, and it gets its own page because it is a different town underneath: a different age of housing, a different amount of shade over it, and its own city line to be on the right side of when a booking is made.

Clicking is not the same fault as not lighting

The single most common call from this side of the city line is a burner that clicks. What the clicking means depends entirely on when it stops.

A burner that clicks and never lights is usually a gas-delivery or spark-path problem. A cap sitting a fraction out of position after a clean will do it. So will a port ring that has pitted enough to spoil the flame path, moisture standing in the well after a wash, or a spark electrode whose ceramic has cracked so the spark tracks to the nearest metal instead of jumping the gap it was meant to.

A burner that lights normally and then keeps on clicking is a different fault. The control is not being told that the flame has established, so it keeps trying. That is a sensing and grounding question, and the return path runs through the burner hardware itself — a cap seated on corrosion, a loose burner base screw or a wet well all break it. On a range a few blocks from the Atlantic, corrosion is the likeliest reason that path has gone high-resistance, which is why we inspect and clean the mechanical assembly before anyone prices an ignition module.

So the useful thing to tell us on the phone is the sequence, not the conclusion. “It clicks six times and then lights with a thump” and “it lights instantly and then clicks until I turn it off” send us out with different parts in the van. “The igniter is bad” sends us out with a part that turns out to be fine about half the time.

The salt exposure is the same, or worse

Atlantic Beach fronts the same ocean and takes the same onshore wind. Houses on the blocks nearest the water are in the steep part of the exposure curve, and their hoods, burner caps and stainless behave exactly like their counterparts south of the city line.

There is one local variable worth naming: Atlantic Beach has a genuinely mature tree canopy across much of the older town, which shades roofs and slows the dry-out cycle after rain. Metal that stays damp longer corrodes faster than metal that dries quickly, so a shaded exterior blower housing or a covered outdoor kitchen here can look worse than an equivalent one in full sun a few streets away.

The town runs from small older beach houses to substantial rebuilds on the same lots, and both extremes show up in our schedule.

In the older houses the problem is usually the opening rather than the appliance: a modern built-in package fitted into cabinet depths that were never meant for it, with clearances closed up so the trim sits flush. A wall oven that cannot shed heat cooks its own control board. Replacing the board without correcting the installation buys another board failure.

In the rebuilds, the problem is more often make-up air. A well-sealed house cannot feed a high-capacity hood, so the hood sounds busy and captures poorly. The appliance tests fine because the appliance is fine.

When you call

Give us the model number from the rating plate — it is on the frame behind a door, under a drawer, or behind the kick panel depending on the appliance — and describe the behaviour rather than the diagnosis. “It clicks and never lights” tells us more than “the igniter is bad”, because half the time the igniter is fine and the ground path is not.
